This was not a standalone download, it was a modification that required the original games to operate. It’s also important to note that the IW4X mod - as well as IW6X and the Black Ops III project - always pointed people towards official, legitimately purchased versions of the original games in order to access the mod. While the original Modern Warfare 2 Steam release is all but dead and infamously lacked dedicated servers, a server browser, FOV options and more, IW4X transformed the game, breathing new life into a classic and allowing players to run and regulate their own custom servers.
These were open source mod projects for Modern Warfare 2 (2009), Call of Duty: Ghosts and Black Ops 3 respectively that allowed players to run their own dedicated servers on a decentralized network with custom scripting, maps, modes, guns, skins, player mechanics like leaning and more.įor years, IW4X in particular has been a massively popular project in the Call of Duty community on PC. For those unaware, X Labs was the modding collective behind IW4X, IW6X and most recently, an in-development build for Black Ops 3.
